Hazard Predictions

SOCl2 reacts with esters, such as ethyl acetate, forming toxic SO2 gas and water soluble, toxic acyl chlorides, catalyzed by Fe or Zn (Spagnuolo, C.J. et al. 1992. Chemical and Engineering News 70(22):2). CO2 gas may be produced by a similar reaction of acyl halides with esters (Predicted).

Caution should be used before proceeding. Further research of comparable examples in the literature or very small scale, carefully controlled experiments may be needed to fully assess compatibility. The generation of gases may be rather slow, however confinement may lead to dangerous conditions.
