Hazard Predictions

HCN adds to acetone to form acetone cyanohydrin, which is water soluble and toxic, under strongly basic conditions. Note: Since CN- is strongly basic, the same reaction will likely occur with cyanide salts (Levy, A.B. 2002. Acetone. In Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry. Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA. (Online)).

The reversible reaction of ketones and cyanide salts generally requires a catalyst in order to favor the products (Personal communication with chemical industry experts).

The cyanohydrin reaction only occurs under neutral or basic conditions (Loudon, G. Marc. 2002. Organic Chemistry, 4th ed. Oxford University Press. p. 855).
