Hazard Predictions

Alkali metals perform stepwise one-electron reductions of ketones, forming reactive radical intermediates. In the presence of proton sources, flammable alcohols are produced (E. M. Kaiser, Synthesis, 1972, (8), p. 391-415; W.C. Fernelius and G.W. Watt, Chem. Rev. 1937, 20, p. 195-258).

Ketones may be reduced to hydrocarbons by group I or II metals (The Clemmensen Reduction) (Morrison, R. 1973. Organic Chemistry. Allyn and Bacon, Inc, Boston, pp. 631). Saturated hydrocarbons with fewer than five carbons are flammable gases.

Ketones may liberate flammable H2 gas upon exposure to group I metals (Predicted by comparison to similar reactions).
