Hazard Predictions

Reactions of alkali metals and thiols produce flammable H2 gas and corrosive metal thiolates (W.C. Fernelius and G.W. Watt, Chem. Rev. 1937, 20, p. 195-258; F. E. Williams and E. Gebauer-Fuelnegg, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1931, 53, p. 352-6).

Alkali metals perform one-electron reductions of thioethers, producing corrosive metal thiolates and metal alkyls. In the presence of proton sources, toxic thiols and flammable alkanes may be produced (F. E. Williams and E. Gebauer-Fuelnegg, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1931, 53, p. 352-6; W.C. Fernelius and G.W. Watt, Chem. Rev. 1937, 20, p. 195-258).
