The presence of moisture affects the stability of diazonium salts. A moist product, if allowed to stand packed together, may undergo spontaneous decomposition. In damp weather, when spread out on paper, the salts become dark and slowly decompose (Organic Syntheses, Vol. 13, p. 46 (1933)).
