Hydrocarbons, Aliphatic Unsaturated mixed with
Quaternary Ammonium and Phosphonium Salts

Hazard Predictions

Chiral quaternary ammonium salts have been widely used as phase-transfer catalysts for Michael addition reactions between electron-deficient olefins and certain carbonyl compounds (Albanese, D. 2008. Phase-Transfer Catalysis. Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology). However, the quaternary ammonium ion solely acts as a stabilizing counterion for the active intermediate species, and does not actually react on its own.

Furthermore, no evidence was found for a hazardous reaction between quaternary ammonium salts and unsaturated hydrocarbons outside of this highly controlled scenario.
