Hazard Predictions

HCN, a weak acid and toxic gas, could be liberated by the combination of the dissociated inorganic cyanide salt in aqueous solution with a weak acid (Predicted). Many acidic metal salts in aqueous solution will generate small amounts of hydrogen ions that can react with the aqueous cyanide to form HCN. Cyanide gas concentrations will slowly build up.

Potassium cyanide reacts with copper(II) sulfate to form toxic cyanogen gas ([CN]2), copper cyanide, and potassium sulfate (Rubo, A., Kellens, R., Reddy, J., Steier, N. and Hasenpusch, W. 2006. Alkali Metal Cyanides. Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry. (Online)).
