Hazard Predictions

When combined, strong oxidizers and organic sulfides may react with intensity, as shown in the examples below. However, no specific evidence was found for a hazardous reaction between weak oxidizers and organic sulfides. Because of the nature of the members of the Weak Oxidizing Agents group we would not expect reaction kinetics to yield hazardous conditions. We urge chemists to perform testing to ensure that hazards do not occur under conditions appropriate to the scenario.

NaClO3 can form flammable or explosive mixtures with sulfides (MCA Safety Datasheet 42, Manufacturing Chemists' Association, Washington, 1952).

Thiols react violently with Ca(OCl)2 and other strong oxidizers (Lewis, R.J., Sr. 1992. Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, 8th Edition. New York: Van Nostrand Reinhold. pp. 2183).
