Hazard Predictions
- Generates gas: Reaction liberates gaseous products and may cause pressurization
Urethane decomposes in hot aqueous acid, producing toxic ammonia gas and inert CO2 gas (Lewis, R.J., Sr. 1992. Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, 8th Edition. New York: Van Nostrand Reinhold. pp. 3472). This reaction is likely to be much more hazardous with strong acids than with weak acids. However, it should be noted that these reactions can occur, and over a period of time gas build-up may occur.
Potential Gas Byproducts
- Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
- Ammonia (NH3)
